It is important for you to understand CD/DVD Blu-ray Duplication and Replication in order to determine the best suitable process for your project. Both the processes are different and so are the final products.
So, what are the processes involved in CD/DVD Duplication and CD/DVD and Blu-ray Replication?
Let’s start with CD/DVD Duplication – Have you ever burnt a CD/DVD on your personal computer? CD Duplication is quite similar to that. A CD/DVD duplicator also works by extracting the data from a master disc and then writing it on to a blank one. At a “CD/DVD/Blu-ray duplication” facility, it can copy a hundred or more of a master simultaneously. This is done through multiple towers that are linked together with each one of them containing several CD/DVD recording trays. The process ends once the entire data is copied and verified with the master disc. Simple, isn’t it?
Now let’s move to the more complex one i.e.
CD/DVD/Blu Ray Replication – This process is done by injection molding similar to making a car part or a keyboard. In the end, a CD/DVD or Blu Ray disc is a piece of plastic with grooves and beautiful printing on top. The process begins by creating a flawless glass master from the client supplied master. This is literally etched out of a piece of glass. Once the glass master is created, molded stampers are created (each able to be used approximately 10,000 times). The stampers are placed into a replication machine and a exact amount of Bayer poly carbonate resin beads are heated and pushed against the stamper making a perfectly clear round disc with all of your data included. Next, the ridged side is turned over and an liquefied aluminum coating added. Then a clear coating is placed on top of the aluminum coating. From that point, the disc is custom printed on the top and packaged for sale. Notice the stamped ridged edge is not the side you can touch. It’s protected by the coatings. This process enables the product to be handled without worry of scratching. A scratch won’t ever hurt the actual data and in most cases even scratches can be cleaned off and your disc will work perfectly.
The quality of CD/DVD or Blu-ray Replication is directly proportional to the quality of the data contained in the glass master. Therefore, extreme care is taken to maintain consistent quality and accuracy throughout the process. After all, the end goal is to get discs that are an exact replica of the original.
To sum up, CD/DVD and Blu-ray Duplication and Replication have totally different manufacturing processes and in terms of cost, the process of replication proves to be a cheaper one for large quantities. The choice, however, totally depends on your need. No matter what you choose, at the end of the day, the final product in both the cases, will give the same performance – but in durability – replication is the clear winner.
